Gone are the times of tasteless retro websites and quirky-coloured Nintendo games. Modern design is all about simplicity, matching color schemes and great user experience. The difference between bad design and good design is easily spotted when you try using something you’ve never seen before.
Let’s take for example, a web application. User interface and user experience can make or break an app. You know its design is bad when there is a big learning curve before you’re able to start using the product on your own. If you need heavy training and lots of tutorials before you can wrap your head around it - that’s bad user experience. Contrary to that, when the interface is designed to be intuitive, you will feel like the app is familiar and easy to use, even though you’ve never seen it before. You’ll be able to perform complex tasks without any form of on-boarding. Now that’s thanks to great design.
Why do businesses need to be “pretty”?
Emerging technologies allow us to experience the world in ways we never could before. This is perfect for business owners because it helps them present their products and services creatively, and there’s always room to strike and surprise the audience. Design is the first thing users notice, so a great visual experience can make them stay, interact and then hopefully - buy.
It has been scientifically proven that the average person remembers 95% of a message when it is watched, whereas only 10% remember it when it is read. This is why design matters, and it’s why companies are creating videos, presentations and info-graphics instead of sticking with just articles and research papers. Have you noticed how popular typography has gotten lately? Designers use it because it tricks your brain to think that it’s seeing an image, even though you’re actually reading text.
Everything you read above sounds amazing and full of opportunities, right? If you have a user-friendly website or application you’re already doing the right thing. We wouldn’t expect any less - most companies have already noted the importance of design for their overall image and business success, so everybody and their mother hired a UI/UX expert. What now?
How can I stand out?
As hard as it might sound, only companies who manage to “wow” people can stand out. The average consumer is so used to having great experience served on a silver platter, that a decent product with good design is no longer groundbreaking - it’s taked for granted. Fortunately, technologies can help. In a couple of years, your trustee single-page website will be old news and your 3D interior previews will be “so last year” (citing our millennial colleagues).
Some companies have already taken the leap at creating their new websites in VR, or combining 2D and 3D design to provide other forms of interactive experience. Imagine this: you’re doing a virtual building walk-through to choose your future apartment. You move across the living room, you “sit” in front of the TV… and you’re able to open websites.
Yes, this is possible. At MetaStudio, we like to experiment with combining different techniques so we can create unique products for our clients. The above cited scenario is actually an example of our real work. Check it out!
Do you have a crazy idea on how to present your business? We’re keen on innovating and we aren’t scared of the word “custom”. MetaStudio knows how to take your idea to the next level.
But maybe… you don’t have an idea, you just know you need great design for your product or your online presence. Great! We love to pick our brains and build skyscrapers from the ground. That was a metaphor, but we can also literally build skyscrapers. In VR.
